Slashing Meaning

Slashing is a punitive mechanism built into Proof-of-Stake (PoS) blockchains to ensure that "Validators" follow the protocol's rules. If a validator acts maliciously-such as attempting to "Double Sign" two different versions of a block to cause a fork-or is extremely negligent, the network automatically "Slashes" (destroys) a significant portion of their staked collateral. The technical goal of slashing is to create a "Positive Cost of Corruption." In a PoS system, the security of the network is backed by the "Economic Value" of the stake.

Slashing ensures that an attacker loses more money than they could potentially gain from a successful exploit. There are two main types: "Downtime Slashing" (usually a small penalty for being offline) and "Equivocation Slashing" (a severe penalty for attempting to subvert the consensus). For "Delegators" (users who lend their tokens to a validator), slashing is a major risk.

If the validator they choose is slashed, the delegators lose a portion of their tokens too.

This encourages "Due Diligence" and helps prevent "Centralization," as users are incentivized to spread their tokens across many "High-Reputation" validators rather than just picking the one with the highest advertised yield.
