Validator Meaning

A validator is a participant in a proof-of-stake (PoS) or similar consensus mechanism who verifies transactions and adds new blocks to the blockchain. Validators replace miners in PoW systems; instead of solving energy-intensive puzzles, they stake a portion of their tokens as collateral, which can be slashed if they act dishonestly.

Validators are responsible for checking the validity of transactions and ensuring that they adhere to protocol rules. They participate in consensus by proposing and attesting to blocks, and in return, they receive rewards in the form of transaction fees or newly minted tokens.

By requiring a stake, PoS aligns validators’ incentives with the health of the network, as malicious behaviour could result in a loss of staked funds.

High-quality validators maintain uptime, use secure infrastructure, and run up-to-date software to support network security and performance.
