Signer Meaning

A "Signer" (or Signing Authority) is an entity-usually a wallet or a hardware device-that has the legal or technical power to approve a transaction by providing a "Digital Signature." In the context of a "Multi-sig" wallet, a signer is one of the "Keys" required to move funds. For a blockchain protocol, a "Signer" might be a "Validator" that signs off on the validity of a new block. In modern "Smart Contract Wallets" (like Safe), the "Signer" is separated from the "Account." Your wallet address (the account) stays the same, but you can "Add" or "Remove" signers over time.

This allows for Flexible Security; you could have your phone, your laptop, and a hardware wallet as the three signers for your account. To move a large amount of money, you might require a signature from 2 out of those 3 signers, ensuring that "One Lost Device" doesn't mean "Lost Funds."The role of the signer is becoming more complex with the rise of Account Abstraction (ERC-4337).

Now, a "Signer" can be anything: a FaceID scan, a Google login, or even a session key from a game.

This "Abstraction" allows for a "Web2-like" user experience where the "Cryptographic Signing" happens in the background, but the user remains the ultimate "Signer" who holds the "Root Authority" over their digital assets.
