ERC Meaning

ERC, short for Ethereum Request for Comment, is a category of standards used to define how applications, tokens, and smart contracts behave within the Ethereum ecosystem. ERCs function as shared technical guidelines that developers can follow to ensure interoperability across wallets, exchanges, decentralized applications, and infrastructure providers. Because Ethereum is open-source, anyone can propose an ERC, but widespread adoption only occurs when the community and core developers recognize its usefulness and security.

ERCs are especially important because Ethereum has no centralized authority enforcing design choices. Instead, shared standards act as coordination mechanisms that allow independently developed applications to work together seamlessly.

Token standards are the most well-known ERCs, but the category is broader and also includes standards for registries, interfaces, metadata formats, and contract behaviors. When developers follow a common ERC, users benefit from predictable behavior, such as being able to store tokens in any compatible wallet or trade them on multiple platforms.

Not all ERCs are adopted equally. Some remain experimental or niche, while others become foundational building blocks of the ecosystem.

ERCs that gain traction often influence broader protocol decisions and may later be referenced by Ethereum Improvement Proposals. In this way, ERCs serve both as technical documentation and as a grassroots governance layer, reflecting how Ethereum evolves through community consensus rather than centralized planning.
