Queued Transaction Meaning

A queued transaction is a transfer or smart contract execution that has been broadcast to the network but remains in the mempool waiting for inclusion in a block. This state occurs when the network is congested or the gas fee attached to the transaction is lower than the current market demand.

In account-based systems, transactions must be processed in a specific sequence, meaning one stalled transaction can hold up all subsequent ones from the same address. The underlying logic relies on a counter known as a nonce, which ensures that every transaction from a specific address is processed in a strict, chronological order. If a transaction with a lower nonce is "stuck" due to an insufficient fee, the EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) cannot skip over it to process higher-nonce transactions, even if they offer more gas.

To resolve this "bottleneck," users must often perform a replacement transaction by resending the data with the exact same nonce but a significantly higher gas price. From a user experience perspective, queued transactions are a major hurdle for mainstream adoption. During periods of extreme volatility, "gas wars" can cause thousands of transactions to sit in a pending state for hours.

This delay can lead to missed opportunities in trading or the liquidation of collateral in DeFi protocols, making advanced gas estimation tools and "cancel" functions essential features for any functional digital wallet.
