Virtual Machine Meaning

A virtual machine (VM) is a software implementation of a computer that runs programs like a physical machine. By abstracting the underlying hardware, VMs allow multiple operating systems and applications to run concurrently on a single host machine.

In the context of blockchains, the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) executes smart contract code on every node in the network, ensuring that contracts produce the same output regardless of where they run. VMs provide isolation, ensuring that programs do not interfere with one another and that malicious code cannot access the host system.

Beyond blockchain, VMs are widely used in cloud computing to maximise hardware utilisation, facilitate sandboxing for testing, and deploy applications across diverse environments.
