Kimchi Premium Meaning

A market phenomenon where the price of digital assets, most notably Bitcoin, is significantly higher on South Korean exchanges compared to the global market average. This price gap is named after the traditional Korean dish and is caused by strict capital controls in South Korea that limit the flow of money in and out of the country.

Because it is difficult for arbitrageurs to move large amounts of fiat currency into South Korea to buy Bitcoin elsewhere and sell it locally, the "premium" can persist for long periods, sometimes reaching 20% or more. This indicates high local demand and a lack of available supply within the "walled garden" of the South Korean financial system.

For global traders, the Kimchi Premium is often used as a sentiment indicator; a rising premium suggests extreme "retail" exuberance in the Korean market.

However, attempting to profit from this gap is risky for non-residents due to the legal complexities of withdrawing Korean Won and the potential for the premium to collapse suddenly if regulations change.
