CVV & CVC Meaning

Card Verification Value (CVV) and Card Verification Code (CVC) are security features used to authenticate credit and debit card transactions, particularly in card‑not‑present situations such as online purchases. The CVV or CVC is a three‑ or four‑digit number printed on the back or front of the card and is not encoded in the magnetic stripe.

When entering payment information on a website, the buyer must provide the CVV/CVC to prove possession of the physical card. Merchants transmit this code to the card issuer as part of the authorization request. If the code does not match the issuer’s records, the transaction is declined.

Because CVVs are intended to confirm that the customer has the card in hand, merchants are typically prohibited from storing them. Customers should avoid sharing CVVs through insecure channels, and issuers regularly change the codes when reissuing cards to reduce fraud risk.
