Cryptojacking Meaning
Cryptojacking is a form of cyberattack in which malicious actors secretly use another person’s or organization’s computing resources to mine cryptocurrency without consent. Unlike traditional mining, where participants invest in hardware and electricity, cryptojackers externalize these costs onto unsuspecting victims. This type of attack typically occurs through malware infections or browser-based scripts.
In malware-based cryptojacking, attackers deliver malicious code via phishing emails, compromised software downloads, or exploited system vulnerabilities. Once installed, the malware runs in the background, consuming CPU or GPU resources to mine cryptocurrency for the attacker.
Browser-based cryptojacking involves embedding mining scripts into websites. When users visit an infected site, the script executes automatically, using their device’s processing power as long as the page remains open.
More advanced variants persist even after the user leaves the site. Cryptojacking is designed to be stealthy.
Instead of immediately disrupting systems, attackers often throttle resource usage to avoid detection. Common symptoms include degraded system performance, overheating, increased power consumption, and unexplained spikes in CPU usage.
While cryptojacking does not typically steal data, it represents a serious security and operational risk, particularly for enterprises, cloud environments, and institutional infrastructure. Preventative measures include endpoint security, network monitoring, browser protections, and strict software update practices.
