Operational risk Meaning

The risk of loss resulting from inadequate or failed internal processes, people, and systems, or from external events. In crypto, operational risk is massive.

It includes the risk of losing private keys, smart contract bugs, employee theft, or server downtime. For a DeFi protocol, a hack due to a coding error is an operational risk event.

For an exchange, the server crashing during a period of high volatility is an operational failure that can lead to lawsuits from angry traders. Mitigating operational risk requires rigorous auditing, insurance, redundancy planning, and strict internal controls.

Institutional investors cite operational risk (not price risk) as their primary concern when entering the crypto market.
