Casascius Coin Meaning

Casascius coins are physical tokens that contain digital bitcoins embedded within them. Created by Mike Caldwell starting in 2011, each coin is stamped with a private key hidden under a tamper‑evident hologram. As long as the hologram remains intact, the bitcoin associated with the private key is secure. To redeem the digital value, the owner peels off the hologram and imports the key into a digital wallet, destroying the coin’s collector value.

Casascius coins come in various denominations, from fractions of a bitcoin to multiple bitcoins, and are made of brass, silver and even gold. They became collectibles due to their novelty and limited issuance. Because they contain private keys, shipping them across borders can raise regulatory issues; Caldwell stopped selling funded coins in 2013 after U.S. authorities raised concerns.

Today, unfunded replicas and similar products exist, but original Casascius coins with intact holograms command premiums in the collector market. They serve as a tangible reminder of Bitcoin’s early days and the interplay between physical and digital currency.
