API Meaning

An Application Programming Interface (API) is a standardized method for software systems to communicate with one another. APIs define the structure of requests and responses between two parties-such as a trading bot and an exchange, or a wallet application and a blockchain node. In practice, an API allows one system (Party A) to request data or trigger an action from another system (Party B) according to predefined rules.

Public APIs are typically documented, enabling developers to automate tasks, integrate services, or build custom tools. Within crypto markets, APIs enable:

Because APIs allow selective, permission-based access to resources, they provide a secure mechanism for interacting with platforms without exposing full account privileges.

For example, a trader building a strategy on an exchange can use API keys with granular permissions (read-only, trading-only, withdrawal-blocked) to automate execution safely. At a high level, an API is simply an interface contract that ensures consistent, reliable communication between independent software systems.
