Vat Registration Number Meaning

A VAT registration number (VRN) is a unique identifier assigned to businesses that are registered to collect value-added tax (VAT) in jurisdictions where VAT applies. VAT is a consumption tax levied on goods and services at each stage of the supply chain.

When a business exceeds a revenue threshold set by the tax authority, it must register for VAT and obtain a VRN. This number appears on invoices and enables businesses to reclaim VAT paid on purchases and remit VAT collected from customers.

In the European Union, the VRN follows a country-specific format; for example, a UK VRN starts with “GB” followed by nine digits.

For crypto businesses operating in VAT jurisdictions, understanding VAT obligations and properly displaying VRNs is essential to maintain compliance and avoid penalties.
