URI Schemes Meaning

Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) schemes specify the syntax and semantics for identifying resources on the internet or other networks. A URI scheme appears before the colon in a URI and indicates the protocol or method used to access the resource, such as `http`, `https`, `mailto`, `ftp`, or `bitcoin`.

In cryptocurrency, custom schemes (e.g., `bitcoin:`, `ethereum:`) allow wallets and payment services to interpret payment requests encoded within a hyperlink. For example, clicking a `bitcoin:` link in a browser that supports the scheme can open a wallet app with a pre-filled address and amount.

URI schemes enhance user experience by enabling interoperability and automation, but they also introduce security risks if malicious actors craft links that trick users into sending funds or divulging credentials.

Adhering to standards and implementing safeguards in applications helps ensure safe use of URI schemes.
