Typosquatting Meaning

Typosquatting, also known as URL hijacking, is a type of cybercrime where malicious actors register domain names that are deliberate misspellings or slight variations of legitimate websites. When users mistype a URL-such as leaving out a letter or accidentally substituting similar characters-the typosquatted site can harvest credentials, distribute malware, or display phishing pages that mimic the real site.

In cryptocurrency, typosquatting often targets exchange and wallet websites; users who inadvertently navigate to the fake site may enter private keys or seed phrases, resulting in theft. To protect against typosquatting, companies register common misspellings of their domains, and users rely on bookmarks or carefully check URLs before entering sensitive information.

Browser extensions and security software can also warn about suspicious domains.
