Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) Meaning

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is a security method that requires users to present two distinct types of credentials before accessing an account or service. Typically, these factors fall into different categories: something the user knows (like a password or PIN), something the user has (such as a hardware token or mobile authenticator app), or something the user is (biometric data, like a fingerprint or facial scan).

By requiring two factors, 2FA significantly reduces the risk of unauthorised access compared with password-only authentication. In the crypto world, exchanges and wallets encourage users to enable 2FA through SMS codes, TOTP (Time-based One-Time Password) apps like Google Authenticator, or hardware keys like YubiKeys.

While 2FA adds an extra step during login, the protection it offers against phishing and brute-force attacks makes it a best practice for safeguarding digital assets and sensitive data.
