Travel rule Meaning

The travel rule is a regulatory requirement that obligates virtual asset service providers (VASPs), including cryptocurrency exchanges and custodians, to share certain identifying information about the originators and beneficiaries of transfers above a specified threshold. Initially developed for wire transfers under the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) recommendations, the rule aims to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing by enabling authorities to trace funds across platforms.

When a transfer occurs between two VASPs, the originator’s name, account number, and physical address, along with the beneficiary’s name and account number, must accompany the transaction data. Compliance with the travel rule requires robust know-your-customer (KYC) procedures, secure communication channels between VASPs, and interoperable data standards.

Failure to comply may result in fines or regulatory sanctions, making the travel rule a critical component of global crypto compliance frameworks.
