Soft Fork Meaning

A Soft Fork is a backward-compatible upgrade to a blockchain's protocol. In a soft fork, the new rules are more restrictive than the old rules, meaning that "Non-upgraded" nodes will still see the new blocks as valid.

This allows for a "Smooth" transition where the network doesn't split into two different versions, unlike a "Hard Fork" which is not backward-compatible.A classic example is the SegWit upgrade on Bitcoin. Because the new data was hidden in a way that old nodes didn't see, they continued to follow the chain without realizing the rules had changed.

This "Opt-in" nature makes soft forks the preferred way for conservative networks like Bitcoin to evolve, as it doesn't "Force" every participant to upgrade immediately, preserving the network's stability. However, soft forks require a "Majority" of miners or validators to support the change. If the majority doesn't upgrade, the new blocks might be "Orphaned." The technical nuance is that while old nodes accept the new blocks, the new nodes will Reject blocks that don't follow the new, tighter rules.

This "Forward Pressure" eventually forces the whole network to align, ensuring the protocol evolves without a permanent schism in the community.
