Social Engineering Meaning

Social Engineering is a non-technical psychological attack that involves manipulating people into divulging confidential information or performing actions that compromise security. In the fintech world, this is the most common way hackers gain access to accounts, as it is often easier to "Hack the Human" than it is to hack the encryption of a blockchain.Common tactics include Phishing (sending fake emails to steal passwords), Vishing (voice calls pretending to be tech support), and "Impersonation" on social media.

A common crypto-specific attack involves a hacker pretending to be a "Support Admin" on Discord or Telegram, asking for a user's "Seed Phrase" to "Fix" a wallet issue. Once the user provides the words, their funds are gone instantly.Because social engineering exploits human trust and urgency, the best defense is education and "Zero Trust" protocols.

Banks and exchanges repeatedly state they will "Never ask for your password," yet these attacks remain highly successful.

Implementing "Multi-sig" wallets and hardware keys provides a physical barrier that social engineering alone cannot overcome, adding a layer of "Hard Security" to a "Soft" human problem.
