Rugged Meaning

Rugged is the past-tense slang term used when a user has fallen victim to a Rug Pull. To be rugged is to have the value of your investment wiped out by a developer's intentional malice rather than a natural market correction.

It is a specific type of being Rekt that implies a betrayal of trust by the project's creators. In a broader sense, Rugged is now used to describe any situation where a protocol's foundation fails. This could include a bridge being hacked or an algorithmic stablecoin losing its peg (e.g., UST got rugged).

The term highlights the Permissionless Risk of DeFi: because anyone can deploy code, the burden of Code Due Diligence falls entirely on the user. If you didn't check the Liquidity Lock, the community will often say you were asking to be rugged. The prevalence of getting rugged has led to a culture of Vetting within crypto communities.

Many traders now use Rug Checkers (automated tools like Tokensniffer) that scan a contract for Red Flags like an unverified source code or a high Dev Wallet concentration. While these tools aren't perfect, they provide a first line of defense in an environment where Don't Trust, Verify is the only rule for survival.
