RFS Meaning

RFS (Request for Service) is a service management term used in the IT and fintech sectors to describe a formal request made by a client to a service provider for a specific task that falls outside of standard automated operations. This could include requesting a custom API integration, asking for an increase in withdrawal limits, or initiating a specialized security audit for an institutional account. This protocol is a core component of the ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) framework, moving through a strict workflow of logging, impact analysis, and approval.

In a high-stakes financial environment, an RFS is often tied to a Service Level Agreement (SLA) that dictates response times. This ensures that a client's multi-billion dollar operation isn't stalled by administrative delays or poorly documented manual changes. In the crypto custody space, RFS is frequently used for manual cold storage withdrawals.

Because the assets are physically air-gapped from the internet for security, moving them requires a human-in-the-loop process.

A client submits an RFS, which then triggers a series of multi-signature approvals and physical security protocols to move the funds, balancing the need for absolute security with the requirement for operational responsiveness.
