Retargeting Meaning

Retargeting, specifically within the context of Bitcoin and other Proof-of-Work (PoW) blockchains, is the periodic adjustment of the network's mining difficulty. This mechanism ensures that blocks are produced at a consistent average interval (10 minutes for Bitcoin) regardless of how much total computing power (hashrate) is being directed at the network. The mathematical adjustment occurs every 2,016 blocks, a period known as a difficulty epoch.

The protocol compares the actual time taken to mine those 2,016 blocks against the target time of exactly two weeks. If the network was too fast, the difficulty increases; if it was too slow, it decreases.

This thermostat is what makes Bitcoin's monetary policy autonomous and resistant to human intervention or rapid technological leaps in hardware. In a broader fintech sense, retargeting also refers to a digital marketing strategy where ads are served to users who have previously visited a platform but did not complete a transaction.

In the competitive crypto exchange market, retargeting is used to win back users who abandoned a KYC process or a deposit screen, utilizing browser cookies and tracking pixels to maintain brand presence across the web.
