Play To Earn Meaning
Play To Earn (P2E) is a business model for video games that uses blockchain technology to allow players to earn real-world value, usually in the form of NFTs or cryptocurrency, by playing the game. In a traditional game, you spend time and money to earn digital items that you don't actually own; you cannot sell them for cash or move them to another game. In a Play-To-Earn game, the achievements and items are tokenized, giving the player true ownership of their digital labor. The pioneer of this model was Axie Infinity, which became a global phenomenon in 2021.
Players in some regions were earning more money battling digital creatures than they could at a local minimum wage job. This turned gaming from a leisure activity into a form of work. The game’s economy was powered by two tokens: a governance token and a reward token that was minted every time a player won a match.Technically, P2E economies are open-loop systems.
Because the tokens are on a public blockchain, they can be traded on decentralized exchanges. This creates a real-time market price for the player's time.
However, this also makes the games vulnerable to hyperinflation. If too many players farm the rewards and sell them for cash without enough new participants entering the system to buy and burn those tokens, the price will collapse. The first generation of P2E games was criticized for boring gameplay that people only played for the money.
The next generation is moving toward Play-and-Earn, where the focus is on building a high-quality game that is fun to play, with blockchain rewards acting as a bonus rather than the primary motivator. As the Metaverse grows, P2E is evolving into Play-To-Own, where players actually own the land and assets within the digital world.
