Hyperinflation Meaning

An extreme economic condition where a currency loses its value at an accelerating rate, typically defined as price increases exceeding 50% per month. This is usually caused by an excessive expansion of the money supply by a central authority, often to fund government deficits or pay off debts that cannot be covered by tax revenue.

As the currency's purchasing power collapses, the "velocity of money" spikes because citizens rush to spend their cash as soon as they receive it. This rapid circulation further fuels price increases, creating a destructive feedback loop that can lead to the total abandonment of the local currency in favor of bartering or hard assets.

For many in hyperinflationary environments, decentralized assets and stablecoins offer a lifeline.

Because these assets are not controlled by the local government, they provide a way to preserve wealth and conduct commerce when the national tender has become functionally worthless.
