Merkle Tree Meaning

A hash tree data structure named after its inventor, Ralph Merkle. It is a mathematical way of condensing a massive amount of data into a single root while maintaining the ability to verify any individual piece of data within that set.

Blockchains use Merkle Trees to organize transactions. They are bottom-up structures: you start with transactions, hash them in pairs to create branches, and continue until you have one root.

They allow for efficient auditing and simplified payment verification (SPV).
