Load Shedding Meaning

A defensive technique where a system intentionally "drops" or ignores some incoming requests when it reaches its maximum capacity. Instead of trying to process everything and crashing the entire system, the system prioritizes "critical" tasks and rejects "non-critical" ones.

For example, an exchange might "shed" requests for historical price charts so that it can prioritize "Buy" and "Sell" orders. Users might see a "System Busy" message, but the "Matching Engine" stays alive to process trades.

It is a "fail-safe" mechanism designed to protect the core functionality of the platform. In blockchain networks, "gas fees" act as a natural form of load shedding.

When the network is full, the price to send a transaction rises. Users who aren't willing to pay the high fee are effectively "shed" from the network, leaving only the "highest priority" (highest paying) transactions to be processed.
