Keylogger Meaning

A type of malicious software (malware) or hardware device designed to record every keystroke made on a computer or mobile device. For users, a keylogger is a catastrophic security threat because it can capture passwords, private keys, and seed phrases as they are typed, sending them directly to an attacker.

Keyloggers often infiltrate a system through phishing emails, malicious downloads, or compromised browser extensions. Unlike a virus that might crash a computer, a keylogger is designed to be "silent," running in the background for months without the user’s knowledge to maximize the amount of sensitive data stolen.

To protect against keylogging, users are encouraged to use hardware wallets (where the private key never touches the computer), password managers with auto-fill features, and on-screen virtual keyboards for sensitive inputs.

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is also a vital defense, as the attacker would need more than just the logged password to gain access to an account.
