Jurisdiction Meaning

The legal authority of a specific court or government to exercise power over a person, a company, or a transaction. In the globalized and decentralized world of digital assets, "jurisdiction" is one of the most complex and contested issues.

Regulators often claim jurisdiction based on where the "users" are located, even if the company is based in another country. For example, the U.S.

SEC often claims jurisdiction over any project that sells tokens to U.S. citizens.

This has led many projects to "geo-block" certain countries to avoid falling under their strict legal rules. "Jurisdiction shopping" is a common practice where companies move to countries with "friendly" regulations (like Bermuda, the UAE, or Switzerland).

However, as international rules (like the FATF "Travel Rule") become more standardized, the ability to escape regulation simply by moving "offshore" is rapidly diminishing.
