Infinite Mint Attack Meaning

A catastrophic security exploit where an attacker finds a vulnerability in a smart contract that allows them to generate an unlimited supply of a token. This often stems from a logic error in the code, such as an integer overflow or a lack of access controls on the "mint" function.

Once the attacker creates billions of "free" tokens, they immediately sell them on decentralized exchanges. Because the supply has become functionally infinite, the price of the token crashes to nearly zero in a matter of seconds, "draining" the value from liquidity pools and leaving all other token holders with worthless assets.

These attacks highlight the critical importance of rigorous smart contract auditing and formal verification.

Because of the immutable nature of the ledger, once an infinite mint attack begins, it is nearly impossible to stop without a coordinated "pause" of the contract or a hard fork of the network.
