Iban Meaning

International Bank Account Number; a standardized international numbering system developed to identify bank accounts across national borders. It consists of a two-letter country code, two check digits, and a long string of characters that specify the bank, the branch, and the individual account number.

The primary purpose of the IBAN is to facilitate the automatic processing of payments, reducing errors and delays in cross-border transfers. The check digits allow the sending bank to mathematically verify the account's validity before the funds are sent, preventing money from being stuck in manual reconciliation.

While not used for domestic transfers in the United States, the IBAN is a foundational requirement for the SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) system.

In the context of digital finance, IBANs are often provided by "on-ramps" to allow users to wire fiat currency directly into their digital asset accounts via traditional banking rails.
