Decentralised Finance (DeFi) Meaning

Decentralised finance, commonly known as DeFi, refers to a broad category of financial applications built on blockchain networks that operate without centralized intermediaries such as banks, brokers, or clearinghouses. DeFi platforms rely on smart contracts to automate financial processes, allowing users to interact directly with protocols to lend, borrow, trade, earn yield, or manage assets in a permissionless environment. These applications are typically open source and accessible to anyone with an internet connection and a compatible wallet.

At the core of DeFi is the idea of trust minimization. Instead of relying on institutions to custody funds or enforce agreements, users interact with code that executes predefined rules transparently. Transactions are recorded on public blockchains, making them auditable and verifiable by anyone.

This model reduces counterparty risk associated with centralized intermediaries, while shifting responsibility toward smart contract security and user key management. DeFi has enabled the creation of new financial primitives, such as automated market makers, liquidity pools, algorithmic stablecoins, and on-chain derivatives. These components can be combined through composability, allowing developers to build complex financial systems by integrating existing protocols.

This modular design has accelerated innovation and lowered barriers to entry for financial experimentation. Despite its rapid growth, DeFi introduces new risks.

Smart contract bugs, economic exploits, and oracle failures can result in irreversible losses. Market volatility can also trigger cascading liquidations.

Regulatory uncertainty remains another challenge, as DeFi protocols often operate across jurisdictions without clear legal frameworks. Even so, DeFi continues to reshape how financial services can be delivered, emphasizing openness, programmability, and global access.
