Cryptography Meaning

Cryptography is the science of securing information through mathematical techniques that protect data from unauthorized access, modification, or forgery. It underpins nearly all modern digital systems, including secure messaging, online banking, cloud computing, and blockchain networks. At its core, cryptography transforms readable data (plaintext) into an unreadable format (ciphertext) using algorithms and keys.

Only parties with the correct cryptographic keys can reverse the process and access the original information. This ensures confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity across insecure networks.

There are three primary cryptographic primitives. Encryption protects data confidentiality.

Hash functions ensure data integrity by producing fixed-length outputs that change dramatically if the input is altered. Digital signatures provide authentication and non-repudiation, allowing recipients to verify the sender and confirm that data has not been tampered with.

Blockchain technology relies heavily on cryptography. Hash functions link blocks together, digital signatures authorize transactions, and consensus mechanisms depend on cryptographic guarantees to prevent fraud and double spending.

Without cryptography, decentralized systems would be impossible to secure. Modern cryptography balances security with efficiency and is continuously evolving in response to advances in computing power, including the long-term risks posed by quantum computing.
