Cross zone replication Meaning

Cross‑zone replication is a data redundancy strategy that replicates data across multiple geographic zones or availability zones within a cloud provider’s network. Each zone consists of independent data centers with separate power, cooling and networking. By storing copies of data in different zones, organizations protect against localized outages and improve disaster recovery.

In practice, cross‑zone replication can be synchronous or asynchronous. Synchronous replication writes data to multiple zones at the same time, ensuring strong consistency but potentially increasing latency. Asynchronous replication introduces a small lag but reduces overhead. Cloud services like object storage, relational databases and file systems often offer cross‑zone replication as a managed feature.

By leveraging multiple zones, applications achieve higher availability and durability. However, replication incurs additional costs and complexity, so businesses must balance resilience with budget constraints and consistency requirements.
