Cross-Chain Bridge Meaning

A cross-chain bridge is an infrastructure component that enables the transfer of tokens or data between separate blockchain networks. Bridges function by locking assets on one chain and minting or releasing equivalent assets on another.

Bridges play a vital role in expanding liquidity and usability across ecosystems. They allow users to move assets between networks optimized for different use cases, such as security, scalability, or smart contract functionality.

There are centralized and decentralized bridge models. Centralized bridges rely on trusted custodians, while decentralized bridges use smart contracts, validators, or relayers.

Each approach introduces different risk profiles. Cross-chain bridges have been frequent targets of exploits due to their complexity and high value concentration.

As a result, institutional users carefully assess bridge security, governance, and insurance mechanisms before adoption.
