Centralized Finance (CeFi) Meaning

Centralized Finance (CeFi) refers to crypto-based financial services that operate through centralized institutions rather than decentralized protocols. CeFi platforms provide services such as trading, lending, borrowing, yield generation, and derivatives using traditional corporate structures. CeFi acts as a bridge between traditional finance (TradFi) and decentralized finance (DeFi).

These platforms often resemble banks or brokerages, managing user accounts, enforcing compliance rules, and maintaining custody of assets. Examples include centralized exchanges, crypto lenders, and custodial yield platforms. One major advantage of CeFi is usability.

CeFi platforms offer intuitive interfaces, customer support, fiat integration, and regulatory familiarity. This makes them appealing to newcomers and institutions that require compliance clarity.

However, CeFi sacrifices self-custody and trust minimization. Users must rely on the platform’s solvency, operational integrity, and security practices.

Funds can be frozen, rehypothecated, or lost due to mismanagement-risks that materialized during several high-profile CeFi failures. CeFi’s centralized nature also exposes it to regulatory oversight and censorship.

Governments can impose restrictions, demand disclosures, or shut down services entirely. While CeFi continues to play a significant role in crypto markets, especially for liquidity and onboarding, it stands in philosophical contrast to DeFi’s permissionless and trustless model.
