AML Meaning

Anti-money laundering (AML) refers to the set of laws, regulations, procedures, and controls designed to prevent criminals from disguising the origins of illicit funds and integrating them into the legitimate financial system. In traditional finance, AML frameworks require banks, brokers, and other financial institutions to monitor transactions, verify customer identities, and report suspicious activity to authorities. In crypto and digital assets, AML has become a central focus as regulators apply existing standards to new technologies.

AML in this context aims to make it difficult for bad actors to convert illicit crypto into fiat currency-or to use exchanges, OTC desks, and other platforms to obscure the trail of funds. Key AML components include:

Many jurisdictions draw on frameworks such as those from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), as well as national securities and commodities regulators, to shape AML obligations for crypto businesses. As a result, exchanges, custodians, and institutional trading venues increasingly integrate AML solutions, on-chain analytics, and robust compliance teams into their operations.

Effective AML programs balance regulatory compliance with customer experience and privacy, ensuring that legitimate users can transact efficiently while making it more difficult for criminal activity to blend into normal flows. For institutions, strong AML controls are a prerequisite for working with banks, payment providers, and regulated counterparties in the broader financial system.
