ZK-SNARK Meaning

A ZK‑SNARK is a cryptographic proof protocol that allows one party (the prover) to demonstrate possession of certain information (e.g., a secret key) without revealing that information to the verifier. ‘Succinct’ means proofs are short, and ‘non-interactive’ means the proof requires no back-and-forth communication beyond the initial message.

ZK‑SNARKs have been deployed in privacy-focused cryptocurrencies like Zcash to enable shielded transactions, and they underpin many zero-knowledge rollups.

While powerful, ZK‑SNARKs require a trusted setup to generate certain parameters, and proving can be computationally intensive.
