Wrench Attack Meaning

A wrench attack is a colloquial term for an attack in which an assailant uses physical intimidation, such as holding a wrench, to force someone to reveal the private keys or credentials needed to access their cryptocurrency.

The term emphasises that no matter how secure one’s digital defences are, physical threats can override them.

To mitigate wrench attacks, crypto holders use measures like multi-signature wallets, where multiple private keys stored in different locations are needed to authorise a transaction; time-delayed withdrawals; and distributing seed phrases among trusted parties.
