User Authentication Meaning

User authentication is the process of verifying that an individual or entity attempting to access a system or resource is who they claim to be. This process typically involves the presentation of credentials, such as a username and password, biometric data (fingerprint, facial recognition), hardware tokens, or cryptographic keys.

In the digital world, authentication serves as the first line of defence against unauthorised access and is often combined with authorisation, which controls what authenticated users can do. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) enhances security by requiring multiple types of credentials.

In cryptocurrency, authentication protects wallets and exchanges from theft; many platforms encourage or require users to employ hardware wallets, password managers, and 2FA.

Strong authentication practices help prevent account takeovers and safeguard sensitive data and funds.
