Trendline Meaning

A trendline is a straight line drawn on a price chart to indicate the general direction of an asset’s price movement over a selected period. In technical analysis, connecting at least two significant lows (for an uptrend) or highs (for a downtrend) can help identify the prevailing trend and potential support or resistance levels.

Trendlines provide visual cues about momentum and sentiment: a steep upward trendline suggests strong buying interest, while a flattening or downward line may signal weakening momentum. Traders use trendlines in conjunction with other indicators, such as moving averages and volume, to make decisions about entry and exit points.

It is important to note that trendlines are interpretive rather than predictive; prices frequently break through trendlines due to news events, volatility, or changes in market conditions.

To improve reliability, traders often adjust trendlines to account for outliers and draw them over longer timeframes to filter out short-term noise.
