Session Management Meaning

Session management is the process of securely handling a user's interaction with a web application over time. Because the underlying protocol of the web (HTTP) is "Stateless," the server doesn't "Remember" who you are between page clicks.

Session management creates a persistent "State," allowing you to stay logged in as you move from your balance screen to the trading terminal.Security is handled via a Session Token or "Cookie" that is issued to your browser after a successful login. This token is a random string that the server uses to look up your account details in its database for every new request.

If this token is stolen-a "Session Hijacking" attack-a hacker can take over your account without ever needing your password. This is why modern fintech apps use "Short-lived Tokens" that expire quickly and require constant renewal.In crypto, session management has an extra layer of complexity: the "Wallet Connection." When you use a dApp, your wallet creates a session with the website.

To prevent unauthorized transactions, most dApps use "Signed Sessions" where the user signs a message (like "Sign in to Uniswap") that creates a cryptographically verifiable proof of identity for that specific session. This ensures that even if the website's database is hacked, the attacker cannot "Forge" your signature to steal your funds.
