Schnorr Signature Meaning

A Schnorr signature is a cryptographic digital signature scheme known for its simplicity, efficiency, and Linearity. While the math was invented in the 1980s, it was protected by a patent until 2008.

It was officially added to the Bitcoin protocol in 2021 as part of the Taproot upgrade, representing one of the most significant technical improvements in the network's history.The key technical advantage of Schnorr is Signature Aggregation. In a traditional Multi-sig transaction (e.g., 3-of-5), every person has to provide their own large signature, making the transaction Heavy and expensive.

With Schnorr, all five signatures can be Combined into a single, small signature that looks exactly like a standard one-person signature. This saves significant block space, lowers fees, and makes complex Smart Contracts on Bitcoin look identical to simple transfers, greatly improving privacy.Beyond space savings, Schnorr signatures are Provably Secure with fewer mathematical assumptions than the previous standard (ECDSA).

They also enable more advanced features like Adaptor Signatures, which are the building blocks for Atomic Swaps and Discreet Log Contracts (DLCs). By making the Bitcoin network more efficient and private, Schnorr signatures have paved the way for the next generation of Bitcoin Layer 2 and DeFi applications.
