Satoshis/Sats Meaning
A Satoshi (or Sat) is the smallest unit of Bitcoin, named in honor of the protocol’s creator. One Bitcoin is divisible into 100 million satoshis (108).
As the price of a full Bitcoin has risen into the tens of thousands of dollars, Sats have become the standard unit for pricing everyday items, transaction fees, and micropayments on the Lightning Network. The technical design of the Bitcoin ledger actually tracks everything in Satoshis, not Bitcoins. When you see 1.0 BTC in your wallet, the software is simply taking the integer 100,000,000 from the blockchain and dividing it by 100 million for human readability.
This integer-based system is critical for preventing Rounding Errors that can occur in floating-point math, ensuring that the total supply of Bitcoin can never exceed the hard cap of 2.1 quadrillion satoshis. The psychological shift toward Stacking Sats is a major trend in retail adoption. For many, owning 0.01 BTC feels insignificant, but owning 1,000,000 Sats feels substantial.
This Unit Bias is why many exchanges now allow users to view their balances in Sats. Furthermore, the Lightning Network operates almost exclusively in Sats, enabling Streaming Money where a user can pay 1 sat per second to watch a video or read an article, a use case that is impossible with the high fees of traditional credit cards.
