Sanctions Screening Meaning

Sanctions screening is a critical compliance process where a financial institution checks its customers, their transactions, and their counterparties against Watchlists issued by governments (such as the US OFAC list). The goal is to prevent the institution from facilitating the movement of money for sanctioned individuals, terrorist organizations, or countries under embargo (like North Korea or Iran).Technically, this involves Fuzzy Matching algorithms.

Because names can be spelled differently across languages or intentionally misspelled to bypass checks, the software doesn't just look for an exact match. It calculates a Similarity Score based on phonetics and common variations.

In the crypto world, this has evolved into Wallet Screening, where a company uses blockchain analytics to see if a customer's funds have ever touched a Blacklisted address associated with a sanctioned entity or a known hack. The stakes for sanctions screening are extremely high. Violating OFAC sanctions can lead to billions of dollars in fines and the loss of a bank's license.

In the crypto space, the sanctioning of Tornado Cash (a privacy mixer) created a major technical challenge for DeFi protocols. Many frontend interfaces were forced to implement automated Address Screening, blocking any wallet that had interacted with the Tornado Cash contract to ensure they remained compliant with US law.
