Regenerative economy Meaning
A regenerative economy is a financial system designed to restore and renew the social and environmental resources it uses, rather than simply extracting and depleting them. In the world of Web3, this is known as "ReFi" (Regenerative Finance).
It focuses on using blockchain incentives to solve global coordination failures, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and poverty. This model treats Negative Externalities-like pollution-and turns them into assets that can be priced and traded. For example, a protocol might issue carbon tokens representing a ton of sequestered carbon.
By making these tokens "composable" with DeFi, companies are incentivized to protect forests to earn tokens that they can then use as collateral or sell to other businesses needing to offset their emissions. The strategic goal of ReFi is to align profit with purpose. In a traditional extractive economy, it is often more profitable to cut down a forest than to save it.
In a regenerative economy, the blockchain creates a market for good, where the financial rewards for protecting a resource are higher than the rewards for destroying it. This involve using "Quadratic Funding" to ensure that capital is distributed to projects that provide the most value to the community.
