Real World Assets (RWA) Meaning
RWA refers to the tokenization of physical or traditional financial assets-such as real estate, gold, treasury bills, or carbon credits-onto a blockchain. The goal is to bring the transparency, 24/7 liquidity, and programmability of DeFi to the trillions of dollars worth of assets that currently exist in the legacy financial system.
This is widely considered the "holy grail" for mass institutional adoption of blockchain technology. The process creates a legal and digital bridge where a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) owns the physical asset and issues tokens representing a beneficial interest. These tokens are often "Permissioned," meaning they can only be held by wallets that have completed KYC/AML verification.
This allows the asset to be traded with the speed of a cryptocurrency while remaining fully compliant with local securities laws and property rights. The impact of RWA is profound: it allows for "Fractionalization," where a $50 million office building can be split into $1 tokens, allowing retail investors to participate in high-end real estate. Furthermore, once an asset is tokenized, it can be used as collateral in DeFi.
An investor could hold tokenized Gold and use it as collateral to borrow stablecoins, creating a seamless loop between physical value and digital-native financial utility.
