Proof of Burn (PoB) Meaning

Proof of Burn (PoB) is a Consensus Mechanism where users Earn the right to Mine or Validate blocks by Permanently Destroying (Burning) a portion of their own cryptocurrency. To Burn a coin, you send it to an Eater Address (a Black Hole address) from which the coins can Never be Spent because the Private Key is Unknown. The More Coins you burn, the Higher your Chance of being selected to Create the Next Block and earn a Reward.The Economic Logic of PoB is that it functions as a Virtual Mining Rig.

In Proof of Work, you Burn electricity to buy Hardware and Secure the network. In Proof of Burn, you Burn the currency itself to achieve the same result. It is a Self-Regulating System; if too many people burn coins, the Supply Drops, the Price Rises, and it becomes More Expensive to burn more, preventing a Monopoly on the network.PoB is often used during the Launch of a new token.

A project might require you to Burn your Bitcoin or Ethereum to Receive the new token. This ensures that the new token has Real Value (as it was Paid for with a valuable asset) and that the Initial Holders have Skin in the Game.

It is a Fairer way to distribute tokens than a Private Pre-sale because anyone can participate by Burning their own assets.The Main Advantage of PoB is that it is Energy Efficient and Sustainable. Unlike Proof of Work, which requires a Constant Flow of Electricity, PoB only requires a One-Time Sacrifice of capital.

However, it is Rarely Used as a Primary Consensus for major blockchains because it can be Deflationary to the point of Stifling Economic Activity. It remains a Fascinating Experiment in Digital Scarcity and Game Theory.
