Post trade process Meaning

The post-trade process encompasses all the activities that occur after a trade has been executed but before the assets are officially settled and transferred. In traditional finance, this is a complex, multi-day affair involving clearinghouses, custodians, and central securities depositories. The goal is to ensure that the buyer has the funds and the seller has the securities, and to reconcile any discrepancies between the two parties’ records.The traditional post-trade cycle is often referred to as T+2, meaning settlement occurs two business days after the trade date.

During this window, several technical steps occur: trade matching (confirming the details match), clearing (calculating the net obligations), and finally, settlement (the actual exchange of value). This delay creates counterparty risk and ties up capital that could be used elsewhere, leading to higher costs for market participants.Blockchain technology aims to collapse the post-trade process into a single, near-instantaneous event.

In a decentralized exchange (DEX), the trade and the settlement happen simultaneously within the same block. There is no need for a separate clearinghouse because the smart contract acts as the escrow.

This is known as atomic settlement. If the buyer doesn't have the funds or the seller doesn't have the tokens, the transaction simply fails to execute, eliminating the need for complex reconciliation.For traditional financial institutions, moving to a blockchain-based post-trade workflow could save billions in administrative costs.

By using a shared ledger, all participants have a single source of truth, removing the need for each bank to maintain its own siloed database and manually compare it with others. As regulations catch up, the industry is moving toward real-time post-trade processing, which will drastically increase the efficiency and liquidity of global markets.
