NFT ID Meaning

An NFT ID (or Token ID) is a unique integer assigned to a specific NFT within a smart contract. When an NFT contract is deployed, it manages a ledger of IDs.

For example, in the CryptoPunks contract, there is a distinct entry for Punk #0, Punk #1, all the way to Punk #9999. The combination of the Contract Address (which identifies the collection) and the Token ID (which identifies the specific item) creates a globally unique identifier on the blockchain.

No other asset in the world can have that specific pair of coordinates. This ID is also what links the token to its Metadata.

When a marketplace like OpenSea displays an NFT, it queries the smart contract: "What is the metadata URI for Token ID #55?" The contract responds with a link (often to IPFS) that points to the image and description for that specific ID. If the ID were changed or swapped, the image would change with it.
