LockBit Ransomware Meaning

A notorious and highly sophisticated type of malicious software that encrypts a victim's files and demands a "ransom" payment (usually in Bitcoin or Monero) in exchange for the decryption key. LockBit operates on a "Ransomware-as-a-Service" (RaaS) model, where the developers lease the software to "affiliates" who carry out the actual attacks.

LockBit is known for its "Double Extortion" tactic: they not only lock your files but also steal sensitive data and threaten to leak it on their "Leaked Site" if the ransom isn't paid. This puts immense pressure on companies to pay, as a data breach can lead to massive fines and reputational damage.

Defending against LockBit requires "Defense in Depth"-regular offline backups, multi-factor authentication, and employee training to prevent the initial "phishing" email.

Law enforcement agencies worldwide actively track the "wallets" associated with LockBit, and in some cases, have been able to seize the servers and provide decryption keys to victims for free.
